The Judge's
House is situated in Çamlibel village which is 15 miles west of
Kyrenia in North Cyprus. Çamlibel
is an unspoilt typical Cypriot village,
well away from the usual tourist tracks, and mercifully free
from contempory trappings.
Set 825ft above sealevel it enjoys a most pleasant climate with beautiful air and
little humidity. The
surrounding area is wooded with rich soil and sustains the
market-garden farming community whose Turkish-Cypriot members
are most friendly and who welcome visitors into their way of
life. An old cottage in the grounds has been restored to a high standard to give
accommodation for two people seeking peace, quiet and relaxation.

The
village has several small shops, a butcher and a tailor who specialises
in trousers. Two taverna serve simple kebabs to the local inhabitants and an
excellent meal can be enjoyed for approximately £5 per head. Looking eastwards there is a wonderful view of the southern face of the
Kyrenia mountain range and the Troodos mountains can be seen on
most days, 30 miles to the south . This area is ideal as a centre for painting or
walking holidays or just quiet relaxation. The nearest beach is 5
miles away with many other sandy beaches within easy reach on the north
coast and the west coast. Spring flowers and orchids are all around the village and the famous black
tulips grow wild nearby. Many splendid walks are within easy reach for the
other parts of the year.
Many Turkish Cypriots speak English. Driving
is on the left and electrical fittings are 240V 50 Hz with standard
UK 3 pin plugs. Although the Turkish Lira is the official currency,
Sterling, Euros and US dollars are readily accepted. Credit cards are not
favoured by the smaller shops as their trading margins are tight and the
credit card company charge to the retailer becomes significant for them.
A
9 hole golf course at Pendyia is in a fabulous coastal setting 20 minutes
away to the West with the mountains of Troodos and the Kyrenia range in
constant view but it does have browns rather than greens !!!
The main house was built in the Colonial style
by a well known British judge, Cyril Griffith-Williams, on his
retirement in the early 1950's, and bears a close resemblance to
the Law Courts in Nicosia. His maid
Myrianthi lived in the old cottage hence the name "Myrianthi's
Cottage" . It has been converted to form holiday
accommodation of a high standard for two people. Guests staying in the cottage are encouraged to use
the owners' pool which is set away from the house and cottage.
