There are four main beaches where active turtle conservation is carried out.  Akdeniz on the west coast, Aligardi beach on the North coast and two Turtle beaches in the Karpas or panhandle area, one on the north coast and one on the south.

Long stretches of empty sandy beaches are still to be found in the Karpas.

Wild donkeys roam the Karpas and cause damage to crops.  Discussions are taking place to decide whether or not to export the surplus donkeys to Turkey where they can be used as working animals.

Cape Andreas, the extremity of the peninsular, is where St Andrew landed.  A  monastery there is the  venue of an annual pilgrimage on the 'Andreas' name day for South Cypriots as is the healing spring which has flowed since St Andrew smote the rock with his stick.

The Karpas is still relatively empty but the new roads which make it accessible from Camlibel in 2 hours mean that the solitude must be enjoyed whilst it lasts.
